Bill of Lading: The original document that
lists the services, actual charges, and dates of
the move and the receipt for the customer’s
belongings.
Binding Estimate: The mover provides a flat
rate prior to move. The rate remains the same
regardless of the move length.
Carrier: The moving company you are
working with.
Department of Transportation: The federal
agency responsible for the regulation of the
transportation industry.
Estimate: A non-binding estimate on the cost
of move and services.
En Route: Moved items in the process of
being delivered.
Gross Weight: Weight of the truck after
shipment has been loaded.
Hauler: The truck operator who actually does
the moving of the goods.
Household Goods: Personal items that are
used in the home.
Interstate Move: A move to a different
address in another state than the original
address.
Intrastate Move: A move within the state of
the original address.
Inventory: A list of all items included in the
move and their condition.
Local Move: A move within a specific
geographic region such as a town or district.

Moving Kit: A moving package containing all
the essential items needed to move.
Net Weight: The actual weight of the
shipment.
Operating Authority: A certificate issued by
the state of federal government giving
clearance to move household goods from
state to state.
Origin: The original address the shipment is
being moved from.
Overcharge Claim: Filed by the customer
regarding transportation services.
Packed by Carrier: Household items packed
by Metropolitan movers.
Packed by Owner: Household items packed
by the customer.
Rate: The applicable charges to the shipment
and services.
Storage: Safekeeping of goods in a
warehouse.
Tare Weight: Weight of the moving truck
prior to loading that includes all the moving
tools to be used.
Tariff: A published list of the rules, rates, and
charges for the transportation of goods. The

Transit Time: Time it takes to move your
items from the original to new address.
